Bringing Worlds to Life: A Free Introduction to Concept Art with Kanishka Muthuthanthri

On August 17th, 2024, Mogo Media Academy once again opened its doors to creativity and inspiration, hosting a free Introduction to Concept Art workshop for the public. This was not just another event—it was a journey into the power of visual storytelling, led by Sri Lankan-born American artist Kanishka Muthuthanthri.

A Story of Passion, Perseverance, and Art

Kanishka’s journey is nothing short of inspiring. Growing up in Colombo, Sri Lanka, he was deeply influenced by the timeless animation of Hanna-Barbera, Warner Bros., and Disney. But it was a work-in-progress animation of a bear by Glen Keane for The Fox and the Hound that truly cemented his desire to pursue a career in animation. Knowing that opportunities in Sri Lanka were limited at the time, Kanishka took a bold step—he pursued his dreams abroad. He studied Animation and Illustration at the Academy of Art University and later specialized in 3D Animation at Animation Mentor, learning from some of the best artists from Disney, Pixar, and DreamWorks. His global experience spans across the United States, Sri Lanka, and India, contributing to brands like Coca-Cola, Lenovo, and Necto, while mentoring artists who have gone on to work for Netflix, Disney, and Electronic Arts. Beyond being an animator and concept artist, he is a visionary leader, playing a key role in shaping the animation industry in Sri Lanka and Asia.

A Workshop That Opened Eyes and Inspired Minds

For the aspiring artists and dreamers in attendance, this workshop was a gateway into the world of concept art. Kanishka guided them through the art of visual storytelling, showing how simple ideas evolve into breathtaking worlds, unforgettable characters, and immersive experiences. From character design and storyboarding to the importance of research and composition, attendees got hands-on insights into what it takes to become a concept artist. They explored industry-standard tools like Photoshop, Krita, Illustrator, and Maya, and learned the fundamental skills that set great artists apart. But beyond the techniques and tools, Kanishka left the audience with something even more powerful—belief. Belief that, just like him, they too could rise beyond limitations, follow their passion, and turn their artistic dreams into reality.
